RSV IN AUSTRALIA

RSV is a highly contagious and potentially dangerous respiratory virus that causes seasonal outbreaks and spikes in hospital admissions, usually during the winter months. While most cases of RSV are mild, it can lead to lung infections such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia in children, older adults, and people with underlying health conditions. RSV places a massive burden on Australian communities.

RSV has the greatest impact on the oldest and youngest members of our community, and is the number one cause of hospitalisation of Australian infants. The unpredictable virus puts thousands of infants in hospital each year and can cause serious long-term health issues. It is also an under-recognised cause of illness in older people, where it can cause infections in the airways, hospitalisation, and even death.

RSV immunisation can reduce the burden of severe RSV-related disease. RSV preventative therapies have been proven to prevent severe lower respiratory tract disease and reduce hospitalisation rates. Available overseas, these vaccines and immunisations are used to protect infants (administered directly or via the mother during pregnancy), as well as older adults and people with underlying health conditions.
